A Hyrox Manchester Gym

You may or may not have heard of Hyrox or have even done a Hyrox workout or competition. With some of our coaches and our members now on board the Hyrox train, we wanted to look at how we could extend our offering to include Hyrox training.

Which leads us on to announcing that we are now officially a Hyrox affiliate and will be offering dedicated Hyrox training classes alongside our regularly scheduled CrossFit classes from March 2023.

What is Hyrox?

Hyrox is a fitness race designed on the fundamentals of functional fitness. The race involves every participant running a 1km race followed by 1 functional movement. This is then repeated 8 times to challenge the body and mind. Hyrox is fitness for everybody, and no matter your fitness level there is a Hyrox competition you can enter.

A Hyrox workout typically includes equipment like sleds, sandbags and kettlebells. Movements will usually involve sled pushes and pulls, farmers carries and some rowing thrown in for good measure. With, as we said at the beginning, plenty of running too.

Hyrox vs CrossFit

Hyrox and CrossFit are very similar in several key ways. They are based on the principle that fitness is for everybody and both are scalable for all abilities. They also involve endurance, strength and conditioning, and are grounded in functional fitness.

There are some key differences though, including:

  1. Variables

CrossFit workouts are varied and CrossFit competitions involve multiple styles of workout. A Hyrox competition is based on the same standard format

  2. Running

You might find yourself in a WOD with some running but Hyrox is rooted in running.

  3. Expertise

Hyrox training does require some level of skill to understand the most efficient, effective and safe way to perform specific movements. CrossFit, meanwhile, requires a more in-depth level of skill to master certain movements like toes to bar or hang cleans.

  4. Time

A CrossFit competition WOD can be over in as little as 6 minutes (hello 23.3) whereas a Hyrox race can take around 1.5 hours depending on what level you’re at.

When it boils down to it, there are some differences and some similarities but there’s no actual Hyrox vs CrossFit. If you can do a CrossFit WOD, you can do a Hyrox workout and vice versa; if it’s fitness it’s all good with us.

Hyrox Manchester Affiliate

So why did CrossFit 3D decide to become a Hyrox Manchester affiliate? We’ve been an established CrossFit gym for 13 years, and we’ve seen the impact it has when someone just clicks with CrossFit. It can literally change lives (we’re not being dramatic).

Hyrox training seemed like an obvious addition to what we already offer and an opportunity to see even more people excited by functional fitness. A lot of what we teach at CrossFit can be easily carried over to Hyrox, so it’s a bonus for our members. Yet we understand that not everyone who comes to CrossFit wants to throw barbells around. So Hyrox training is another avenue for people to train in the way they want to. Plus some of our coaches are heavy into Hyrox and it makes sense for them to put their skills and knowledge to good use.

Hyrox Training Classes

If you’re interested in Hyrox training, the new Hyrox classes take place on Mondays at 7.30pm, Wednesdays at 7.30pm and Sundays at 11am. There’s no additional membership needed and you don’t have to be training for a Hyrox competition to join in.

Hyrox Competitions

If you are interested in a Hyrox competition then as a member of a Hyrox affiliate you get discounted entry and priority access to sign up. Keep an eye out for announcements on social media.
